Jesús Gachupin was born in Juárez, Mexico where he held the guitar for the first time. His devotion to the guitar instilled a deep love for the instrument and its timbre. Gachupin pursued his passion for the instrument into college. It is at the University of Texas at San Antonio that Gachupin earned a Bachelor’s of Music in Music Composition and a Master’s of Music in Guitar Performance. Gachupin has had master classes with world-renowned classical guitarists such as David Russell, Pepe Romero, Sergio Assad and William Kanengeiser.
During his studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Gachupin received the Reed Holmes Memorial Award for Composition and has premiered compositions for the Society of Composers Incorporated. His works include Catarsis, for two out of tune guitars, and In the Wolf’s Den, for guitar quartet and small orchestra.
Gachupin has taught music theory and guitar at the Musical Arts Center of San Antonio, St. Phillip’s College, University of the Incarnate Word, Concordia Lutheran School, and Baldwin Magnet School where he directed the Baldwin Electric Guitar Ensemble, and Banjo Band. Gachupin directed Ortiz Middle School guitar program in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His students performed around the Santa Fe community in venues such as Canyon Road, the Scottish Rite Temple, and the St. Francis Auditorium where they premiered In the Wolf’s Den in a side-by-side concert with the Santa Fe Community Orchestra.
